Education - Introduction

Welcome
The Dean & Chapter of Rochester welcome family groups, school children and students of all ages, abilities, cultural and religious backgrounds to learn about this historic centre of Christian worship.
School Visits
The Education Department at Rochester Cathedral is responsible for arranging and supporting over 15,000 British and foreign student visits to the cathedral each year in connection with their curriculum studies or enrichment programmes. A number of curriculum subjects across the key stages may be addressed during a visit to the cathedral, and many teachers also arrange a visit to Rochester Castle or Guildhall Museum to further enhance the learning outcomes for their pupils and students. Special schools are catered for with programmes designed specifically to match the needs of students.
The workbooks and workshops offered by the Cathedral Education Department are related to National Curriculum requirements and, for R.E., the requirements of the Locally Agreed R.E. Syllabi for surrounding areas. Although R.E. and history are often the main subjects studied during a visit to the cathedral, we offer programmes which also cover many other curriculum areas such as art, design, architecture, citizenship, science and literacy. Support materials are available for some of our programmes to provide ideas for pre and post visit classroom work. Full lists of what's on offer can be found on the Foundation / Key stage 1, Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4+, Special Schools and Non UK Schools pages. Copies of our workbooks and support materials can be downloaded from these pages.
We constantly review and add to our list of workbooks, trails and workshops to keep abreast of curriculum requirements. A copy of our current leaflet, background and travel information, and links to other useful websites can be found on the Teachers' Page.
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions page for answers to most queries teachers and organisers might have about arranging their visit. If you have questions which are not answered there please click here to send an email or call 01634 810066.
Family Visits
We also offer a variety of family activities and events throughout the year. Please check the Family Visits Notice Board pages for forthcoming events.
Youth & Uniformed Groups
We are happy to arrange visits for youth and uniformed groups at weekends or during the school holidays. Special Badge days and evenings are held throughout the year.
What Our Visitors Thought
Photographs of work produced following a visit to the cathedral can be viewed and feedback from our visitors can be read on the What the Visitors Thought page.
